Brachial Plexus Injury

Brachial Plexus injury results when a complex network of nerves branching from the spine to the shoulder, forearm and hand is damaged. This medical condition, which is rather uncommon, is seen to affect one in a thousand newborns and a similar number among adults. It can affect functions of movement, feeling and growth of the arm.

At Houston Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery, Dr. Sean Boutros and Dr. Jason Hall offer effective treatment for brachial plexus injuries after performing a detailed examination of their patients.

Occurrence and Symptoms of Brachial Plexus Injury

In adults, brachial plexus injuries are commonly seen after auto accidents, falls, inflammation and contact sports. The following are some of symptoms of brachial plexus injury:

  • Stiffness of joint
  • Swelling of arms
  • Burning, sharp or achy pain
  • Lack of sensation
  • Muscle weakness
  • Paralysis of some or all of the muscles of the shoulder and upper limb

Brachial Plexus Treatment

at Houston Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery

Most patients with brachial plexus nerve injury are able to recover in course of time with specialized therapy. Depending upon the severity of the condition, specialists here at Houston Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery, adopt treatment techniques that are time tested and proven effective. Surgical intervention may be recommended in serious cases when conventional forms of treatment prove ineffective or the condition is unlikely to improve. Nerve repair that is beneficial for adults is done as nerve transfers, nerve grafting or a combination of these. Nerve grafting is sometimes used for children also; in case the brachial plexus injury has given rise to muscle, bone and joint problems in children, surgical procedures are provided to help improve function and growth.
