Cleft Lip and Palate

Cleft lip and palate are congenital conditions affecting the upper lip and the roof of the mouth. These may occur together or independent of each other. In cleft lip, a cleft exists between the medial and lateral lip segments, distorting the lip, nose and very often the upper jaw.  In cleft palate, there is a loss of separation of the oral and nasal cavities.

Dr. Sean Boutros and Dr. Jason Hall of Houston Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery combine their expertise to address these conditions and restore the lip to its normal position through a cutting edge technique known as Nasal Alveolar Molding (NAM).

Advantages of NAM

NAM is a reconstructive plastic surgery for cleft lip and cleft palate which has shown promising results. Its advantages include:

  • More accurate repair of cleft lip by bringing the edges in closer proximity
  • Correction of the nasal deformity for creating a more natural looking nose
  • Correcting cleft palate by repositioning the infant’s alveolar ridges and restoring its normal anatomic alignment

Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate

- Need for Early Treatment

Cleft palate surgery or cleft palate repair is highly recommended in the early stages of infancy without which these congenital conditions can adversely affect the child’s health as well as social interaction by way of speech abnormality, impaired hearing and psychological trauma. Certain clefts involving the gum line might require bone grafting and orthodontic care at a later stage.

Dr. Sean Boutros and Dr. Jason Hall repair cleft lip/palate, restoring/improving your child’s speaking, eating, hearing and breathing faculties and bringing about a more normal appearance. The duration of nasal alveolar molding varies according to the severity of the condition for every infant. The molding period would be longer among those with severe deformity.  We also offer long term follow-up to ensure that our patients are showing excellent progress.
