Mandibular Distraction

Mandibular Distraction or Distraction Osteogenesis is a procedure which corrects Micrognathia (abnormally small jaw). The surgical repositioning of the jaw not only restores facial symmetry by matching the lower and upper teeth but opens obstructed airway, improves ability to eat and overcomes medical conditions such as:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Midface retrusion
  • Cranial synostosis
  • Temporo-mandibular joint ankylosis

At Houston Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery, plastic and craniofacial surgeons Dr. Sean Boutros and Dr. Jason Hall provide quality medical care and support for pediatric patients.

Distraction Osteogenesis

– A Jaw Bone Lengthening Procedure

Distraction Osteogenesis is a procedure in which the specialists make incisions on either side of the jaw bone. A jaw distraction device is placed and stabilized with pins fitted in the bones. In the days following surgery, the device is gradually adjusted to pull the soft tissues and bones apart till the required projection is achieved. The resulting space is quickly filled with the formation of new bone. The distractor is removed after the new bone has solidified and healed. This process may take up to 6 weeks.

After the successful completion of surgery, the operated jaw would continue to grow in proportion with the rest of the face. However, infants with Treacher Collins syndrome or facial clefting syndromes may require a repeat distraction procedure in case the jaw doesn’t grow.
