Orthognathic Surgery FAQ

Orthognathic Surgery (Corrective Jaw Surgery)

Orthognathic surgery involves repositioning the jaws to align properly and to correct several minor and major facial irregularities. The result is a more balanced, and harmonious appearance of the face. The surgery also corrects functional problems such as chewing, eating and breathing difficulties, abnormal speech patterns, early loss of teeth, and disfigurement and dysfunction of the temporo-mandibular joint.

Dr. Hall and Dr. Boutros of the Houston Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery are experts in corrective jaw surgery and can provide you with a personalized solution for any kind of misalignment.

Orthognathic Jaw Surgery

– Solutions for Many Facial Irregularities

Corrective jaw surgery benefits people with misaligned teeth and jaws that cause an improper bite, and also those with weak facial projection (flat faces). These issues could be the result of inherited abnormalities in jaw growth or genetic conditions such as cleft lip and palate or hemifacial microsomia.

Since repositioning the jaws also moves the teeth, orthognathic jaw surgery is performed along with orthodontics so that the teeth are also properly positioned. Certain facial shapes can be brought into balance with orthognathic surgery, providing a more harmonious appearance.  Some of these are:

  • Protruding chin (the “Jay Leno” chin)
  • Weak chin
  • Gummy smile
  • Straining to close the lips at rest
  • Weak facial projection (“flat face”)

Small abnormalities of the jaw can be corrected with orthodontic braces, but for more severe growth disturbances or cosmetic deformities, surgery is often the only permanent solution.

Procedure

The surgery to reposition the jaws usually involves three phases. First, the teeth are properly positioned for surgery using orthodontic braces. This can take up to a year or more for patients with severe jaw abnormalities.

After the teeth are repositioned, plaster models are made to ensure proper alignment, and surgery is performed.  Surgery takes a few hours, is usually done on an outpatient basis, and typically requires about 10 days off from work.

Two to three months after surgery, the teeth are gently manipulated by the orthodontist, if necessary.  After this final stage, the braces are removed.
